ABOUT THE BRAND

The Tama acoustic drum production began in 1961 under the Hoshino Gakki company in Aichi, Japan, originally commercialized under the name Star Drums. In 1974, the division was renamed Tama to mark a high-end turning point. The brand quickly revolutionized the modern percussion market, earning the title "The Strongest Name in Drums" by introducing heavy-duty hardware built for the rising rock and metal scenes.

Tama pioneered structural hardware innovations, including the widespread use of double-braced stands, nylon bushings in 1976 to eliminate friction noise, and the omnidirectional Omni-Sphere tom holder. The brand also introduced legendary shell models, such as the Superstar in 1976—the first mass-market 100% birch kit—and the Imperialstar, which featured an internal Zola-Coat lining.

In 1978, Tama invented Octabans, the iconic narrow tubular drums that became a sonic signature for legendary artists. Renowned for its extreme durability and cutting-edge engineering, the brand became the definitive choice for influential heavy hitters worldwide, establishing a deep-rooted heritage in high-performance drumming.
