Sean Reinert was an American musician and composer, widely considered one of the most influential drummers in the history of progressive metal.
He is primarily known as the co-founder with Paul Masvidal of the iconic progressive metal/fusion band Cynic (1987-2015), with whom he recorded landmark albums like Focus (1993) and Traced in Air (2008).
His most revolutionary contribution was his drumming on Death's album, Human (1991). This record is widely credited as the starting point for the technical death metal genre, as Reinert introduced a level of rhythmic complexity and a jazz-fusion approach previously unheard in extreme metal.
His style was distinguished by his ability to seamlessly blend brutal blast beats with a rare versatility and finesse, integrating ghost notes, jazz rudiments, and sophisticated polyrhythms.
Following Cynic's initial breakup, he co-founded the alternative rock band Æon Spoke. He was also a highly sought-after session musician, collaborating with progressive projects like Gordian Knot and Aghora.
Sean Reinert passed away prematurely in January 2020, leaving behind an unparalleled technical legacy.
