Matt Halpern has redefined the role of the modern drummer through his work with Periphery, pioneers of progressive metal. Renowned for his incredible ghost note precision, explosive power, and exceptional groove, Halpern is a central figure in the Djent movement. His playing style brilliantly fuses technical complexity with a raw, organic feel that sets him apart in the extreme music scene.
Offstage, Halpern is a pioneer in the digital music industry. As a co-founder of GetGood Drums (GGD), he has helped shape the sound of modern music production by providing high-quality drum samples used by producers worldwide. His experience as a former member of Animals As Leaders and his work as an international educator have solidified his reputation as a master of linear phrasing and dynamic control.
To get his heavy, punchy tone, Halpern plays Pearl Drums and uses his own official Pearl signature snare drum. He uses Meinl cymbals, having collaborated with the brand on several custom Byzance models. To handle the intense physical impact of his groove-heavy playing style, he chooses ProMark sticks (including his signature model) and Evans drumheads.
