ABOUT THE BRAND

Officially established in 1989 in Taiwan, Mapex Drums was created as a division of the industrial giant KHS Musical Instruments, which was originally founded in 1930. The brand name was chosen as an acronym for Music And Percussion EXcellence. Leveraging decades of manufacturing experience as an OEM contractor for other international brands, KHS launched Mapex to establish its own global presence, initially partnering with Gibson for distribution.

To break into the global market, the brand introduced the highly competitive Mars series in 1989. By 1993, the Mars Pro series made history by becoming the first in the industry to apply an 8-coat hand-lacquered finish to mid-range drum kits—a manufacturing process previously reserved only for luxury instruments. In 1992, Mapex entered the high-end market with the all-maple Orion series, drawing endorsements from legendary drummers.

The brand's most celebrated innovation came with the Saturn series, which popularized wood hybridization by blending maple and walnut to produce an exceptionally deep and warm low-end response. Mapex also revolutionized shell design with the modern SONIClear™ bearing edge, which allows the drumhead to sit perfectly flat for easier tuning and optimized resonance. In 1997, the brand launched the Black Panther snare drum line, earning an independent reputation for excellence worldwide.
