ABOUT THE BRAND
Founded in 1909 by brothers William F. and Theobald Ludwig in Chicago, Illinois, Ludwig & Ludwig began as a repair shop before changing drumming history forever. Frustrated by slow wooden pedals, William designed the first modern metal bass drum pedal, which provided the speed and durability required for the era's evolving music. By the 1920s, the company launched the Deluxe Black Beauty, a hand-engraved, one-piece brass snare drum that remains one of the most sought-after and copied models in the world.
After navigating the Great Depression and selling the brand to C.G. Conn, William F. Ludwig left to form the WFL Drum Company in 1937, eventually buying back the family name in 1955 to form the Ludwig Drum Company. On February 9, 1964, the brand experienced an unprecedented global boom when Ringo Starr performed with The Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show behind a Ludwig kit in Black Oyster Pearl, instantly cementing the brand as the king of rock drums.
Technically, Ludwig is renowned for its classic 3-ply shells (mahogany/poplar/maple) featuring reinforcement rings for deep warmth, as well as the Vistalite acrylic series introduced in 1972. The brand also patented Ludalloy, an aluminum alloy used to create the Supraphonic LM400, famously played by John Bonham and recognized as the most recorded snare drum in history. Today, Ludwig Drums remains a cornerstone of American rock heritage and premium acoustic craftsmanship.
