ABOUT THE BRAND
Founded in 1883 by Friedrich Gretsch in Brooklyn, New York, Gretsch Drums is one of the most iconic names in percussion history. Initially a small shop making banjos and tambourines, the company expanded massively under Fred Gretsch Sr., who took over in 1895. In the 1920s, the brand pioneered multi-ply laminated wood shells, changing drum manufacturing forever.
The launch of the Broadkaster line in 1935 introduced lightweight 3-ply maple/poplar shells, creating the legendary "That Great Gretsch Sound." By the 1950s, the brand established its signature formula: 6-ply shells without reinforcement rings, heavy die-cast hoops for precise tuning, and the exclusive "Silver Sealer" interior paint to protect the wood and stabilize the tone.
During the 1950s and 1960s, Gretsch became the definitive choice for the Bebop and modern Jazz movements, played by legends like Elvin Jones, Max Roach, and Tony Williams. Today, these vintage "Round Badge" kits are highly sought after by collectors worldwide. Gretsch Drums remains a symbol of rich musical heritage and premium acoustic craftsmanship.
