ABOUT THE BRAND
DW Drums, founded in 1972 by Don Lombardi in Santa Monica, California, began as a teaching studio before transitioning into a manufacturing workshop. Joined by student John Good, the founders initially created an innovative height-adjustable seat to fund the studio, which shifted their focus entirely toward hardware. A major milestone occurred in 1977 with the acquisition of Camco's assets, bringing the iconic round "turret lugs" that became the brand's visual signature.
Drum Workshop revolutionized drumming history in 1980 with the chain-driven DW 5000 bass drum pedal, followed by the 5002 double pedal in 1983—the industry’s first modern, fluid double pedal. By the late 1980s, DW applied a scientific approach to woodworking under John Good. He developed Timbre Matching, stamping the fundamental pitch inside each raw shell to ensure perfectly harmonized kits.
The brand also introduced SSC (Specialized Shell Configuration), varying wood grain orientation to optimize resonance and low-end across different drum sizes. Today, DW Drums stands as the definitive premium American Custom Shop, chosen by iconic professional drummers worldwide for its uncompromising sonic and structural innovation.
